Winterfell
Tools:
Unreal Tournament Editor, Unreal Tournament
Role:
This was a solo project I designed to learn Unreal.
Overview:
The project was to create a Capture The Flag
level inspired by a space seen in movies or TV. We were to go
from graybox, to first pass art to give us an idea of a level
design pipeline. I also decided to document the entire process
and create a Level Design Document based on other works.
Process:
For
this project I wanted to capture as much of Game of Thrones as I
possibly could as its environments in the show were really well
made.
The challenge was keeping it like the show
while also making sure each team was balanced. The problem was
that in the show, the castle was not symmetrical and had more
buildings on one side of the wall.
So instead of
taking and exact copy and remaking it. I took the more important
aspect of the castle. This being the walls, the sept, the
courtyard, and the godswood areas and tried to create them in a
symmetrical map while adding interesting paths to navigate
through. I also tried to find assets that were as close to the
show as I could find.
the last challenge was
highlighting paths players could take while in the dark. To do
this, I made the skybox and directional light very dark and used
quite a bit of point lights to light up entrances and
doorways.
Takeaways:
This project taught me the
Level Design pipeline and good practices on how to make levels.
it showed me how to properly use space and how to pace a level
so it's not too boring or rushed.
